SPIRITHEAD - Psychotria viridis & Banisteriopsis caapi - ayahuasca watercolor print
Psychotria viridis & Banisteriopsis caapi. This power team forms the base of the brew Ayahuasca, which loosely translates from Quechua to mean “vine of the dead/vine of the soul”. Viridis leaves bring the DMT and Caapi bark brings the MAOIs (to prevent our digestive processes from breaking down and inactivating the DMT.) Amazonian indigigenous Americans formulated this brew as a part of their spiritual practice led by well-trained shamans who would offer ceremony and guidance for the brain-breaking journey.

About the series:
Memento Psychotropica is a series of 12 watercolor paintings featuring psychotropic plants and fungi. The name comes from a phrase I made up - “Memento mori, experientia psychotropica” - which roughly translates to, “Remember, you will die: now go experience psychoactives.” I’m not necessarily suggesting anything illegal - but there is a reason that humans have had relationships with these botanicals for thousands of years. Any experience that disrupts our baseline levels of consciousness can be a springboard for self reflection and awareness. Whether it’s meditating over a steamy cuppa tea or vibing with the energy of the universe and watching walls breathe, just... sit with it a minute. Be present.
