HONEYHEAD - Rhododendron luteum - mad honey watercolor print

from $10.00

When bees pollinate certain species of rhododendron, they can end up infusing their honey with grayanotoxins from the pollen, making “Mad Honey”. Documented as far back as 4th century BC for poisoning Greek soldiers, in smaller doses it can be hallucinogenic! In modern-day Turkey and Nepal, it is also touted as providing a “burst of energy” and relieving hypertension.

About the series:
Memento Psychotropica is a series of 12 watercolor paintings featuring psychotropic plants and fungi. The name comes from a phrase I made up - “Memento mori, experientia psychotropica” - which roughly translates to, “Remember, you will die: now go experience psychoactives.” I’m not necessarily suggesting anything illegal - but there is a reason that humans have had relationships with these botanicals for thousands of years. Any experience that disrupts our baseline levels of consciousness can be a springboard for self reflection and awareness. Whether it’s meditating over a steamy cuppa tea or vibing with the energy of the universe and watching walls breathe, just... sit with it a minute. Be present.
